Prep Time 15 mins
COOK Time 60 minutes
1 lb ground beef 1 lb italian sausage 1 medium onion, diced to ½″ 4 cloves garlic, minced 6-oz can tomato paste 2 28-oz cans crushed tomatoes 2 tsp italian seasoning 2 tsp kosher salt 1 tsp ground pepper pinch red pepper flakes, optional ½ tsp baking soda, optional 2 tbsp light brown sugar, optional 1 tbsp fresh chopped basil
Saute the ground beef, italian sausage, and onion until the meat is no longer pink and the onion is translucent. Add the garlic and cook 1 minute more.
Add the tomato paste and work into the meat mixture until smooth and no chunks remain.
Add the crushed tomatoes, italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper (if using). Give everything a good stir.
Adjust for acidity. If you’re sensitive to acid, add ½ tsp baking soda or up to 2 tablespoons brown sugar.
Simmer the sauce at least 30 minutes, and up to 90 minutes. If simmering for longer than 30 minutes, cover the pot or the sauce will reduce too much and become muddy.
Stir in the fresh basil. Serve over your favorite pasta and garnish with more basil and cheese (we like ricotta and grated parmesan).
